Here's a video segment on the Nikon kit that we use. A transcription of the video is available after the jump.
Hands on instructional video on photography from Assignment Construct.
Transcript:
Hi, I’m John Harrington and we’re going to break out and break down the wide variety of equipment we use to deliver images to our clients. Next we are going to show you one of the equipment kits we use when we are traveling on assignment. Each kit is different and has a very specific purpose. So lets take a look.
This kit is our Nikon kit. It houses our D3, a D2X; a primary and a backup. We use a 12mm-24mm DX lens, 70-200 2.8, 24-70mm 2.8, 17-55 DX 2.8, 2X teleconverter. We’ve got a Speedlight SB-800; it’s got the tungsten gel on the front. The reason we use the tungsten gel or a fluorescent gel is to mask the color temperature in the room we’re working in. These are obviously interchangeable, so we can use them depending on the situation we’re in. We use a tungsten or a fluorescent gel.
We have extra double A batteries. We have three think tank cardholders. We really like these think tank cardholders because we can hold a large number of cards; and we can put our unused cards at the top and our used cards reversed on the bottom. What we do with our cards when we’re done shooting them is instead of having them in upwards; we have them in upside down. That’s an indicator to us that we’ve shot on the card and this card needs to be downloaded.
Underneath, we have 17-35 2.8, and we have a 300 2.8. In addition on the 300 2.8, we have a 1.4 teleconverter as well. So between the 2X teleconverter and the 1.4 teleconverter, along with the 300 2.8, we can get a long distance shot and get in real tight if we need to.
We have an off camera sync cord for the strobes, several extra batteries, battery charger, more double A’s, and of course business cards in this kit as well. So that’s our Nikon kit unpacked. We really like the ThinkTanks Airport Security Bag, which is the name of the bag. We think it works really well; it really does a good job of protecting the equipment.
So that’s our Nikon kit as we pack it in the ThinkTanks Airport Security Traveling Case. One of the things that we do is travel light quite often. We travel light with our Canons; we travel light with our Nikons. When we’re traveling in a motorcade following the President, you can’t be burdened with a big rolling case. You have to travel light, and travel fast.
So this equipment gets turned into two smaller cases, and we shoulder the equipment. The D3 will come out, the lens mounted on it. The D2X will come out with another lens on it. Our 70-200 2.8, our wide 12mm-24mm DX, our teleconverters, our off camera, batteries will slip into a side pouch, and extra batteries will slip into the other side pouch. Both of these bags are small Domke bags.
The think tank cardholders will go in there. The strobes will either go on the cameras or in the bags. So one on one shoulder, one on the other. The 300 2.8 will not travel with us, unless we need to and then we shoulder it separately. One camera on one side, one camera on the other side. And this is traveling light with a pair of Nikons.
Below the video is a link to each of the segments, Let me know what you think!

Do you really carry your gear around like that without lens caps or body caps?
If yes then you must have major problems with dust on your sensors.

Why the Canon AND the Nikon kits?

Very informative series of videos! But I was asking myself the same questions as Todd and Michael when watching this video about the Nikon kit.

Hello John,
These videos are really great. But I am aghast at the packing and handling of the Canon and Nikon cameras and lenses. Does the President end up with boogers (dust bunnies) on his face?

Hey, what do you use as the small Domke bags ?
Regards

I was also wondering about you not having any lens caps on your lenses / body caps on your cameras. isn't the risk of scratching the front element of a lens quite big? and don't you worry about dust in lenses and cameras?

I must admit that it looks a little strange seeing no lens caps or body caps but I know John to be a very accomplished photographer and I can only believe that this was just a demo. I know that in the feild that practice would give you real headaches.

My co-worker has a similar Nikon setup and she loves it. Even though she talks about it constantly I still can't find my way around it. I guess if it's more complicated than a camera phone I'm out.

The details of Nikon kit are very valuable and I appreciate the vedio shown. It is truly a mind opener for people who are not aware of it.

Thanks for the post. What do you all think of the future of blogging?I have been reading a lot about google’s attempt to gain preferential treatment for its site from internet providers. This will result in their sites being faster than sites owned by individuals and/or smaller comapnies. It’s my beleif that if google is able to succeed there will be far less websites out there and therefore far less blogging.
