Looks like in the first shot, he had plain ol' direct flash going. I bet he looked at the shot on his camera, saw the bad reflection, bounced it up to 45 degrees, thus removing the reflection, and darkening the image slightly. Am I right?

Shaun - he tells us what was going on in the first shot, but then says that the second and third were done without a flash. The light in the third image looks different from the light in the second image.
