The Business of Healthcare

Friday, November 17, 2006 Concept/Objective:

Assignment ConstructThe objective was to cover the speech by the Secretary of Health and Human Services to a group of business leaders, during a conference at the Ronald Reagan Building.

Pre-Production:

The challenge on this assignment, was bringing the right equipment. Knowing this, I did bring a 300mm lens, because to get a “straight on” shot, that’s much better than an “up the nose” image we would have been stuck with.

Assignment:

The Secretary spoke for under ten minutes, and didn’t gesture as much as we’d like, and we not only needed tight shots, but wide shots showing the panel looking on.

Post-Production:

We delivered a CD under a normal turnaround.

Final Analysis:

I wish this room had more dramatic lighting. All the light-toned wood is bland, but there’s little to do for that – the room’s the room. I was happy to make a few images showing the first few rows to illustrate that there was, in fact, an audience.

In and of themselves, no. But in terms of input to it, of course, we need to hear from the business community. To the extent that government doesn’t step in and do a sufficient job, particularly on things that are currently left outside the public health care system and thus which employers frequently have to cover as part of their employee benefit packages [like] prescription drugs, disability insurance, dental. That affects their bottom line, the way they do business. It also affects their ability to pay their employees real wages, and it affects everybody. So it’s not surprising that they want to get involved and it’s kind of I guess maybe more interesting that they really haven’t up until now.
