Soldier Field And The Future Commander in Chief
Tuesday, August 07, 2007 Concept/Objective:The objective was to cover the client’s coverage of the presidential debate in Chicago, on Solder Field. Trekking out to Chicago was not on my “to do” list this week.
In the middle of my vacation on the West Coast, I was called to travel to Chicago for the day to cover this assignment. My family was understanding, and I boarded the plane with a camera bag, no change of clothes, and a laptop.
Assignment:Taking a taxi to Soldier Field direct from the airport, I arrived about two hours before the debate, and determined where I’d shoot from. As the candidates took the stage, rather than being up in front with the rest of the photographers, I opted for the back-of-house position, for a different angle. Even though it was an overcast day, images made from within their tent looking out were dark, so shooting from outside looking in was better. The images at the end of the interviewers/reporters were flash fill, because that just made for a better image.
We delivered six images from field level, during the debate, which made their way onto several blogs before the debate had ended.
Final Analysis:While I wasn’t happy to interrupt my vacation, it was a presidential debate, so, you do what you have to do!
