Ford’s Funeral
Saturday, December 30, 2006
In an unexpected turn of events, President Ford died, and I needed to change plans to cover the ceremonies.
Visiting the site before the actual ceremony let me see how the casket would be moved, allowed to plan for what would happen, and where to be pre-positioned in.
It was cold, and we were stacked up behind the military detail. Mrs. Ford was positioned at the top of the stairs, and I wanted a straight-on shot up the stairs.
Even though it was late at night, we needed to file the images immediately.
The challenge for this event, was this night was when my wife was throwing my 40th birthday party – a surprise. My family had flown out, and I had to cover this, until 7pm. I immediately left the event, knowing she had planned something, but not knowing what. We arrived at the restaurant, and friends who had been at the Capitol were also there to meet and see me – it was an awesome surprise, I just wish it hadn’t been displaced by the breaking news!

I was amazed how John was able to shoot the images he needed and attend his own party. As the spouse, I was concerned this important national event would eclipse the surprise party I planned. When planning the party, I considering how an assigment might just crop up, but I didn't think the chances were high of a paying gig the weekend after Christmas! In the end, in true professional photographer fashion, John made it to both notable events.

I was reading a book and I saw that some of the presidents political parties weren't always either republican or democrat. are those just the most well known groups?

Gerald R. Ford’s state funeral is missing some of the grandeur of the one for Ronald Reagan two years ago, a reflection of the 38th president’s modest ways and lesser imprint on the nation, according to further planning details released Thursday
